The woman came to check out and I happened to be at the front desk. She told the story about how they were supposed to stay at the Super 8 a few hotels down the street but they had problems with their room (after trying to find the hotel for an hour). We were all chit chatty and she was talking about how great our staff was and how lovely their room was. They went to Disneyland. Her husband had NEVER been and it had been some 25 years since she had been.
So she tells me that they are on their honeymoon and they just got married last weekend and are from Tucson. She goes on to tell me they are going to San Diego next. They both have never really spent any time there. They were going to be staying at a Holiday Inn Express.
She told me that she would come back later when she had the address. I had started telling her about all of my favorite things to do in San Diego.
She came back to visit us at the front desk with her hotel confirmation for San Diego. We looked it up to make sure that she had her directions right so that they wouldn't spend an extra hour looking for the hotel, like they had in Anaheim. The search wasn't working quite like it should have and it felt like something was wrong. We pressed on though and made a list of all the fun things to do in San Diego.
Old Towne - and especially having a strawberry homemade fresh tortilla
Cowboy Star - yummy steakhouse
Little Italy
Anthony's Seafood - across from the Holiday Inn on the Bay
Mission Bay
Seal Beach
LaJolla
She went on her way with her list and her directions.
Since we learned that they were on their honeymoon too late for us to do anything for them, I wanted to call their next hotel to see if they would do something. This is where I ran into a problem. After some internet searches and phone calls, I discovered that the Holiday Inn Express had lost their flag and was no longer a Holiday Inn Express.
I went out to find them before they drove off trying to find a hotel that didn't exist. They were just getting ready to leave our parking lot. I explained to them what happened. They parked and came in. We ended up talking for about an hour. He was a vietnam vet. She has a disabled son who lives with her. They met online. We ended up saving them about $500. The hotel since it was no longer a Holiday Inn Express - was offering lower rates which we got for them. They were so grateful.
Quite the story. Quite the couple. Fun getting to meet them.
